    Boston Public Schools

    Department of Early Childhood

The Boston Public Schools Department of Early Childhood focuses on PreK-2nd grade.

Most notably, the Department has developed its own curricula and instructional supports, with an explicit focus on project-based learning for PreK for 4-year olds, Kindergarten, and 1st grade. Materials for 2nd grade are currently in development. Through a combination of common developmental curricula, professional development, and coaching, the Department is able to continuously improve and align instructional quality across ages and grade levels. In addition, more than 60% of BPS elementary schools have achieved, or are working to achieve, accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Additional elements of the BPS approach include familiy engagement, summer programming, and working with community-based organizations to provide high-quality, full day, full year programming for 4-year-old Boston children.
